A report from AME info revealed an ongoing large-scale scam campaign that is targeting popular brands in the MEA region.
The report says that scammers created counterfeit pages impersonating legitimate organizations to steal personal and payment information from the users.
The campaign targeted 140 famous brands from at least 16 Arabic-speaking countries including the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Industries targeted in the scam are mentioned below:
- 34.8% – Telecommunications
- 10.4% – Public Service
- 9.6% – Retail
- 5.9% – Entertainment
- 5.9% – Automotive
- 3.7% – Electronics
- 3.7% – Oil & Gas
- 3.7% – Fast Food
- 22.2%- Others
The report also mentions that fraud accounts for 73% of all cyber attacks of which 56% are scams and 17% are phishing attacks.
Cyber Security Expert’s Comment
“The scam market is turning into the fastest-growing economy in the world. Each year, the number of cybercriminals, scams, as well as damage caused by them, skyrockets,” says Ashraf Koheil, Director of Business Development of a cyber security firm.
“If you have a well-known brand whether it be a bank, scammers’ long-time favorite, a consumer goods company, or a service provider, it’s just a matter of time before you catch the attention of scammers,” he further added.
