Cyber Security Expert’s Comment:
“Last year brought unprecedented challenges when it came to cyber security as organizations across all industries adapted to forced digital transformation that was caused by the pandemic,” said Majd Sinan, country manager at a cyber security firm in the UAE.
Mr. Sinan further added, “this report will serve as strategic guidance for CISOs”. He also mentioned that this report should be enough for CISOs to realize organizations need better protection in order to stay secure in this digital era.
Another report from KPMG, also shows that the COVID-19 pandemic and remote working culture have attracted several cyber threats in the UAE. As per the report, organizations witnessed 46% email spamming, 50% phishing scams, and 38% online scams.
How to Deal with Email Threats?
As you can see email threats are one of the major issues organizations are facing today. So, now the question is how to deal with email threats? Well, listed below are some of the basic measures that organizations can implement.
When I say basic, do not take it lightly. Why? That is because one thing organizations often overlook is that it is the basic steps that lead the organization to robust cyber security infrastructure. Even though they have implemented hi-tech tools and advanced methodologies.
No matter how much money is spent on securing the organization’s IT infrastructure, if you miss these basic steps, you leave the door wide open for cyber criminals.
5 basic steps every organization should follow:
- Educate Your Employees
Employees play an important role in defending the organization against email threats. After all, they are the ‘first line of defense in the cyber security chain.’ Therefore, the first step to deal with email threats is to educate your employees.
Providing them the right cyber security training that is required will help them learn what these threats look like and also what they need to do to avoid such threats. Tools such as ThreatCop help in achieving the same.
- Strong Password Policy
Ensure your organization is implementing a strong password policy. After all, it is the key to your email and other accounts. Make your employees aware that a password should be a combination of upper and lower case letters along with numbers and symbols. Moreover, it should be unique as well as there should be different passwords for different accounts.
Implementing multi-factor authentication also helps in adding an extra layer of security to your account. Since it helps in cross-checking the identity of the person who is trying to access the account.
- Analyze Potential Threats
It is always better to be prepared to combat cyber threats. To do so, first organizations need to know how strong they are and if there are any loopholes in their IT infrastructure.
Conducting vulnerability assessments and penetration testing (VAPT) periodically will help your organization find vulnerabilities that need to be addressed. It will help fix the loopholes before cyber criminals find them to exploit your organization.
- Deploy Gateways
Email gateways protect your organization from email threats by blocking email-based threats before they reach a mail server. It helps in scanning all outgoing and incoming emails including attachments and links that come with an email.
- Secure Your Email Domain
One thing that helps the malicious actors in launching a successful email attack is that they trick the victim by impersonating a legitimate email domain.
However, this can be prevented by using tools like KDMARC. It helps you in stopping those malicious emails impersonating your email domain from reaching your recipients. Moreover, it also increases email engagement rates and email deliverability.
